The Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) of 1999 and the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations of 2003 set the rules for Kenya's Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA).
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) oversees the ESIA process, which is mandatory for projects significantly impacting the environment or society, particularly large mining, energy, infrastructure, and industrial projects. The ESIA process includes examining project requirements, creating Terms of Reference (ToRs), conducting the ESIA study, public consultation, report submission to NEMA, and obtaining approval and licensing.
Only NEMA-registered experts or firms can conduct ESIAs, requiring specific qualifications and experience. Our firm and the directors are NEMA registered and licensed accordingly and are in good standing. Necessary documentation includes environmental reviews and plans for management and monitoring, with licensing fees based on project costs. Key elements involve the analysis of human health and community well-being, cultural impacts, and stakeholder engagement.
The company works with proponents, lead agencies, project-affected individuals and entities, and experts as primary stakeholders in conducting Environmental and Social Impact Assessments.
